What powers your earphones. Most of you already need one.
Start here: how does your phone handle headphones?
If your phone still has a 3.5mm headphone jack, congrats, you don't need a dongle DAC to power your earphones.
If your phone is USB-C only — most Android phones, every recent iPhone via Lightning or USB-C — you need a dongle to plug in a wired earphone at all. The question isn't whether you need one. It's which one.
The DAC dongle. A small device, usually €50–€200, that does the same job as a €15 adapter but with better internal parts. Louder, cleaner, drives demanding earphones properly. The upgrade most worth making once you're listening to mid-tier earphones or higher.
The DAP (Digital Audio Player). A standalone music player, several hundred euros and up. No phone involved. Better sound, longer battery, no notifications. For people who want music to be its own activity.
Which one do you actually need?
If you're listening to entry-tier earphones, a simple adapter is honestly fine. Save the money. Spend it later when you upgrade the earphones.
If you're listening to mid-tier or high-end earphones from your phone, a proper DAC dongle is the single biggest upgrade you can make for the smallest spend. Skip this and you're not hearing what those earphones can do.
If you want music to be its own thing — no notifications, no phone battery anxiety, longer listening — that's a DAP. It's a serious purchase. Most of our customers don't need one.
