Our take

The FiiO BTR17 takes your music over Bluetooth, up to aptX Lossless and LDAC, or over USB as a wired DAC, and plays it back clean and neutral, without adding colour of its own. A volume knob and a colour screen make it easy to use, and a 10-band EQ in the FiiO Control app lets you shape the sound to your earphones. Full power needs a second cable: on battery it gives 300 mW balanced, and only with external power in desktop mode does it reach 650 mW.

What it'll drive :

Every earphone in the shop, easily, and in desktop mode many full-size headphones too. Its low-noise THX amps keep the background quiet, which suits sensitive earphones.

Streaming & compatibility

Your phone does the streaming, so every app works. Over Bluetooth the codec decides the quality: on Android, LDAC or aptX Lossless get the most out of it (aptX Lossless only on phones that support it); on an iPhone you're limited to AAC, which is Apple's limit, not the BTR17's.

For the best quality, connect over USB-C and it works as a wired DAC with phones and computers.

Power & Battery

On its own battery it gives 300 mW balanced and 140 mW from the 3.5 mm at 32 Ω, more than any earphone here needs. Plug power into its second USB-C port and desktop mode unlocks 650 mW balanced for full-size headphones, without draining its battery or your phone's.

A PC / BT / PHONE switch picks where the power comes from. Battery life is about 8 hours on LDAC, and it charges in about two hours.

What others ask

Is the FiiO BTR17 powerful enough for full-size headphones?

On battery it's built for earphones, giving 300 mW balanced and 140 mW from the 3.5 mm, which is more than any IEM I sell needs. Plug power into its second USB-C port and desktop mode unlocks 650 mW balanced, enough for many full-size headphones at a desk. So the FiiO BTR17 is a pocket amp first, and a small desk amp when you give it power.

Does the FiiO BTR17 hiss with sensitive IEMs?

No, the FiiO BTR17 is a quiet one. Its four THX AAA-78+ amplifier chips are designed for a very low noise floor, with a signal-to-noise ratio of up to 126 dB, so sensitive multi-driver earphones sit on a clean, black background. Keep it on low gain with earphones and save high gain for headphones.

Does the FiiO BTR17 change how my earphones sound?

Barely, and that's deliberate. The FiiO BTR17 sounds clean and neutral, so your earphones keep the tuning you chose them for. If you do want to shape the sound, the FiiO Control app has a 10-band parametric EQ that runs on the BTR17's own processor rather than in a single music app.

Does the FiiO BTR17 work with an iPhone over Bluetooth and over USB?

Yes, both. Over Bluetooth an iPhone sends AAC, which is Apple's limit rather than the FiiO BTR17's, while Android phones can use LDAC or aptX Lossless where the phone supports it. For the best quality on any phone or laptop, plug in over USB-C and it works as a wired DAC up to 32-bit/768 kHz and DSD512.

How long does the FiiO BTR17 battery last?

About eight hours over Bluetooth with LDAC, and it charges in around two hours. A PC / BT / PHONE switch on the FiiO BTR17 picks where the power comes from, so plugged into a laptop it runs off USB, and with your phone it leans on its own battery to spare yours.

FiiO BTR17 or a wired USB dongle: which should I get?

Get the FiiO BTR17 if you like your phone staying in your pocket with no cable to it, or if you want one device for the commute and the desk. Get a wired dongle if you always listen through a cable anyway, since it's smaller, cheaper and has no battery to charge. The BTR17 does both jobs, but you pay for the Bluetooth and the screen.
