Our take

This is for when you want your music on its own device, away from notifications and a battery you're already fighting over.

The R4 runs full Android, so your streaming apps work exactly as they do on your phone — but with a much better amplifier behind them. It's the first player at this price with a "Class A" amp, the kind usually reserved for pricier gear, and it has genuine power on tap. The sound leans warm and easy in normal use, and turns a touch cleaner in its dedicated music mode.

Two honest things to know: it runs warm when you push it hard, and the battery is good rather than great. But as a first real player, it punches well above what it costs.

What it'll drive :

Every earphone in the lineup, comfortably — and then some. The balanced output puts out 525 mW, which is more than any IEM here will ever ask for, so sets like the Mega5EST, Mystic8 and S12 Ultra, all play with easy authority. It'll even push some full-size headphones.

Streaming & compatibility

It runs open Android 12 with the Google Play Store built in, so install anything — Apple Music, Tidal, Spotify, Qobuz, YouTube Music. One honest note if hi-res matters to you: Apple Music on Android doesn't go fully bit-perfect, so Tidal or Qobuz are the better choice for the highest quality.

You can switch modes from the top of the screen: a Pure Audio mode that locks to the music player for the cleanest sound, standard Android for apps, USB DAC mode to use it with a laptop, and Bluetooth receiving mode.

Bluetooth works both ways, so you can also send to wireless headphones.

Power & Battery

Two headphone outputs: 165 mW from the 3.5 mm, and a strong 525 mW from the balanced 4.4 mm.
Two things worth being straight about — that Class A amp is what makes it sound good, but it's also why the R4 gets warm when driving demanding sets on balanced. And the 4500 mAh battery is rated at around 11 hours; in real, mixed use expect closer to 7–10. It charges over USB-C (PD, up to ~20 W).
No charger brick is included in the box — most players in this class leave it out.

What others ask

Is the HiBy R4 powerful enough for hard-to-drive IEMs and headphones?

The HiBy R4 is built for power first, and its Pure Audio mode, which locks it to the music player, gives you the cleanest output it has. If you own a very sensitive set like the Letshuoer Mystic 8, which can hiss on a noisy source, the HiBy R6 III (2025) is the quieter choice. A black background is exactly what the extra €200 buys you.

Does the HiBy R4 hiss with sensitive earphones?

What does the HiBy R4 sound like: warm or neutral?

Warm. In normal use the HiBy R4 leans warm and easy, and in its Pure Audio mode it turns a touch cleaner. If you want a player that adds nothing at all and lets a detailed set like the Hisenior Mega5EST show everything it can do, the HiBy R6 III (2025) is the neutral one in the lineup.

Do Spotify, Tidal and Apple Music work on the HiBy R4?

Yes. The HiBy R4 runs open Android 12 with the Google Play Store built in, so Spotify, Tidal, Apple Music, Qobuz and YouTube Music install exactly as they do on your phone. If hi-res matters to you, Apple Music on Android doesn't go fully bit-perfect, so Tidal or Qobuz are the better choice. It also works as a USB DAC for your laptop.

Does the HiBy R4 get hot, and how long does the battery last?

It does run warm when you push it. The Class A amp that makes the HiBy R4 sound good is also why it heats up driving demanding sets from the balanced output. The 4500 mAh battery is rated at around 11 hours, but in real mixed use expect closer to 7 to 10. It charges over USB-C at up to about 20 W, and there's no charger brick in the box.

HiBy R4 or a USB-C dongle on my phone: what do I actually gain?

Mostly power and focus. The HiBy R4 has a Class A amp and 525 mW on balanced, more than a typical dongle, and your music lives on its own device, away from notifications and a phone battery you're already fighting over. If you only use easy-to-drive IEMs and hate carrying a second device, a good dongle is cheaper and smaller, and that's a perfectly fair choice.
