Sources

What powers your earphones.

Do you need one?

A source is whatever you plug your earphones into — your phone, your laptop, or a dedicated music player.

The honest answer: entry and mid-tier earphones work well from a modern phone. Most of the sound comes from the earphones themselves, not the source. If you're there, save the money.

That changes at the high end. The Mega7, the Mega5EST Bass+, and the Braindance all reward a better source. If you own one of these and you're still listening from your phone, this is the logical next step.

DAC dongle vs. DAP — what's the difference?

DAC dongle — a small device that plugs into your phone's USB-C port. Cleaner, louder output without adding bulk. The standard upgrade for serious listening on the go.

DAP (Digital Audio Player) — a standalone music player. No phone involved. Better sound, longer battery life, no notifications. For when music is its own activity.

Which one is right for you?
