Warm & Vocals

The AFUL Explorer is rich, bassy and forgiving, with voices pulled forward and notes that ring out long, and it loves older recordings like soul, jazz and anything mastered before everything got loud. The shells are comfortable enough that I've fallen asleep on my side wearing them. The stage is close and fine detail gets softened, so it's the wrong set for picking a mix apart.

Is the bass on the AFUL Explorer sub-bass focused or mid-bass punchy?

Mid-bass punchy. The AFUL Explorer puts its warmth in the thump of kick drums and bass guitar, which fills out the sound and gives older recordings their body back, while the deep rumble underneath stays at a natural level. It's thick and cosy, not tight and fast.

How do vocals sound on the AFUL Explorer?

Close, warm and full. The AFUL Explorer brings voices forward and wraps them in warmth, which is lovely with soul, jazz and anything mastered before everything got loud. You don't get the fine vocal texture of a brighter set, since detail is gentle here.

Is the treble on the AFUL Explorer smooth, sparkly or sharp?

Smooth and soft. AFUL built its name on neutral, reference-style tuning, and the AFUL Explorer deliberately goes the other way, with treble that never tires and never bites. Harsh or compressed recordings are forgiven. The tradeoff is air and sparkle, which are in short supply, so cymbals sound gentle.

Is the AFUL Explorer fatiguing over long sessions?

No, it's about as far from fatiguing as anything I stock. The AFUL Explorer is warm with soft treble, weighs about 4.4 grams a side, and the shells are small and light enough that I've fallen asleep wearing them. Isolation is strong for a vented set too, so you don't have to turn it up on a noisy train.

Is the soundstage of the AFUL Explorer intimate or wide?

Intimate. The AFUL Explorer keeps the music close and cosy, more like a small club than a concert hall, and that suits the soul and jazz it's so good with. It isn't the set for big orchestral scale or for picking apart layers in a dense mix.

Does the AFUL Explorer fit smaller ears?

Yes. The semi-custom acrylic shells on the AFUL Explorer run medium-small and weigh about 4.4 grams a side, and they're comfortable enough to sleep on your side in. That makes it one of the easiest recommendations in the shop for smaller ears. Isolation is strong as well, so once it's seated you can keep the volume down.
