Foamax blocks the outside world better than anything else here. The foam expands to fill your ear canal, so less noise gets in and less volume is needed to hear over what does. On a commute that's the difference between listening at a sane level and listening loud.
The sound goes warm. Bass thickens slightly, the top end loses some bite. Foam also has a shelf life — these will feel worn after a few months of daily use where silicone would still be fine.
